Barnet LTC – August 2017 Newsletter

We have lots of information for you this month. Please read and enjoy!

August Bank Holiday Tournament

Our final Bank Holiday event of the year will take place on Monday August 28th. As usual, this is open to all adult members (and juniors with adult status). It will start at 2pm. There will be a £4 entry fee which will include afternoon tea. If you haven’t attended before, please come along to unravel the mysteries of an American Tournament!

‘Lofty Lofts’ LTA Open Tennis Tournament

We had a record number of entries for our Grade 4 Open Tournament this year (over 150), with matches taking place throughout the week. There were some club successes in the Junior events. Tamara Kuti was the winner of the Girls 10 & Under, Kevin Benedict was runner up in the Boys 10 & under and Thomas Butler took third place in the Boys 9 & Under.

In the Adult competition, Stephen Williams won the Men’s Singles and Nicky Fenn made it through once again to the Ladies Finals.

Well done to all who took part.

We are very grateful to Dean Barker of Lofty Lofts, who sponsored the event for the third year running, and to all those members who volunteered their time to sell refreshments.

Autumn Club Finals – Saturday October 14th

No sooner have our Club Championships come to a close than our thoughts turn to The Autumn Tournament. Entries can soon be made on-line. In the mean-time, there are sign-up sheets in the clubhouse. The closing date is fast approaching; Thursday August 17th!

Autumn 1 Day Mixed - Saturday 2nd September

This year the Autumn 1 Day Mixed Tournament will be held on the earlier date of Saturday 2nd September, starting at 1.00p.m. Enter by e-mailing John Hall ( You can enter with a partner of your choice. If you have no partner but would like to enter you can write ‘Partner Wanted’ in your e-mail entry and John will match you up if possible. Please bear in mind that there is no guarantee of being able to find a partner so it’s much safer to find someone yourself!

New Autumn Junior Championships

Following the success of the Junior Club Championships in the summer, John Hall is introducing a new Autumn Junior Championships. The finals will take place on the same day as the adult finals (Saturday 14th October). Details of the qualifying rounds and how to enter will be available shortly.

Summer Camps

Places are still available for John Hall’s summer camps for mini tennis and older juniors. These are not only great fun, but a way of improving quickly over a few days. Choose from full weeks or any number of individual days. Please click the link below to go to the coaching page of the club website where you can download an application form. You can also access forms for junior and adult weekly courses via the same link....

Mixed Nights - Tuesday 12th September and Wednesday 20th September

We will be running 2 coach-led Mixed Nights in September. They will take place on Tuesday 12th September and Wednesday 20th September. There will be doubles drills and tactics with the coaches, followed by a mixture of mixed, men’s and ladies’ doubles - something for everyone! Mixed Nights will run from 7.00p.m. until 9.00p.m. (half an hour later than Men’s and Ladies’ Nights). The cost will be £4.00 per player. No need to book. Just come along.

As usual there will be a number of events running; Men’s singles, Ladies Singles, Men’s Doubles, Ladies Doubles and the Handicap Events – Men’s Handicap Doubles, Ladies Handicap Doubles and Mixed Handicap Doubles.

Please note; for the Men’s and Ladies doubles, you are assigned a partner. This year all doubles events (apart from handicaps) will be 2 sets and a match tie-break at 1 set all. This is to make Finals day a bit more spectator friendly!

All events are ideal for all levels, so please join in. The bigger the entry, the better the tournament. Members are asked once again not to enter unless they know they are available to play on Finals Day. Also, if you are intending to go on holiday during September or October, please check with John Hall, who will make a decision as to whether you can enter.

Follow us on Facebook and Twitter

For those of you who are fans of social media, you can enjoy a more informal take on our events by viewing our Facebook page. Members are always welcome to update the page with news, photos or reports of events. We are particularly keen for any roving reporters keen to relate our tennis successes. You can also follow us on twitter @BarnetLTC.

Summer Club Finals Success

Our Club Finals took place on 9th July. It was wonderful to see so many there supporting the players in our 18 finals. Congratulations to all our adult and junior finalists and winners. There were some closely fought matches. All results are available on our website page. There are also photos on our Facebook page. Thank you to everyone who brought along food to share. It made it a really good day. Thanks also to Mike and Linda Searles for running the BBQ.

Those members who wish to bring non-members along for a game, please remember that they should be signed in to the visitor’s book (hanging next to the floodlight token box in the clubhouse) and a £5 fee paid (money box on r.h.s of token machine). If the clubhouse is locked then you can post this into the postbox on the clubhouse wall. A visitor may not play as such more than 4 times in one year.

One final date for you – our AGM will take place on Sunday October 15th.

After several years in the role, Sheila Rice will be stepping down as Bar Manager. If you think you could take on the position, please get in touch.

Barnet LTC – July 2017 newsletter

 Ladies and Men’s Nights

Our club sessions have almost come to an end, with the final Men’s Night taking place this Wednesday. We hope that those who have attended have found them useful. From next week, members are still welcome to come along and play in. This will continue throughout the summer until floodlights are once again required. Ladies will continue to have priority on Tuesdays and Men on Wednesdays.

Club Finals Day

Our own Finals Day takes place on Saturday 8th July. This is the culmination of several weeks of competition, so please come along and support our finalists, both adult and junior. If you are talented enough to have got through to a final, order of play will go out once all semi-finals have been played (which is often only the evening before!). Adult finals will commence from 11.45am on the astro courts, which will need to be cleared for preparation by 11.15am. Junior finals will be from 2pm and take place on the claytex courts.

The bar will be open all afternoon to help you quench your thirst.

Our fantastic in-house chef, Mike Searles, will be running a barbecue from 4pm, but members are invited to bring a dish to help keep players and spectators nourished during the day.

We have a record 18 finals (counting adults and juniors) to get through on Finals Day. It would be great to have umpires for as many as possible, although not all can have umpires as we haven’t got enough umpire’s chairs for all 4 courts. If you can help please contact our Doug (our official Director of Umpires) - Phone: 07595 763690; E-Mail:

Here’s hoping for good weather to complement some great tennis!

Great British Tennis Weekend

The club is holding two more open days as part of the LTA’s Great British Tennis Weekend on Saturday 22nd July and Sunday 23rd July from 2pm to 6pm.

Once again there will be a full programme of professional coaching “taster” sessions from 2pm to 5pm and a free tennis play for all from 5pm to 6pm.

Details of the membership offer will be available on our website soon. There will be a special membership and coaching offer for any girls who sign up.

Lofty Lofts LTA Tournament

Entries are now open for the annual ‘Lofty Lofts’ Open Tournament, which will be held at the club from Monday 24th July to Saturday 29th July. There are events for every age group starting at 8 and Under through to adults. Junior events are scheduled during the day, and adults are normally in the evenings. To enter please click the link below

Please note, there will still be at least one court available for our members at all times.

Junior Summer Camps

If you are looking for some fun for your children during the school summer holidays, then our coaches are running summer camps throughout and are now available to book. There are camps for mini tennis red and orange 5-9 years, and older juniors playing in full court. The camps are great value and fun, with a mixture of technique, tactics and matchplay appropriate to each age and ability. You can book for a full week or pick and choose and number of days to suit. Please click the link below to go to the coaching page of the club website, where you can download a form....

Three Peaks Challenge

Here is a request from one of our members, Nick Madejczyk.

I know everyone gets a lot of charity requests but I thought I'd do the “don't ask don't get” thing!

3 friends and I are doing the 3 peaks in 3 countries in 24 hours challenge. That is; Ben Nevis (1,345m) in Scotland, Scafell Pike (978m) in England and Snowdon (1085m) in Wales. Three countries in 24 hours! The scheduled dates are 16th to 17th July.

After months of training we decided to raise money for a charity that an old college friend helped to set up and run.  It is called Muskaan UK and they run several projects in India and East Africa for disadvantaged young people.  They provide clean water, education and support for the homeless.

So, if can spare a few pounds (no amount is too small), please donate via:

Best wishes,

Nick Madejczyk and Phil Ridout

As you read this the tournament at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club will be underway. For those members lucky enough to have tickets – ENJOY!

June 2017 Newsletter

Barnet LTC – June 2017 Newsletter

 Election Day

Once again, the club will be in use as a polling station on Thursday 8th June. This means that whilst members are welcome to play, access to the clubhouse will be very limited, and if possible, to be avoided.

With summer under way, we are holding a BBQ after Friday Night Social tennis on June 23rd, so please come along and end your week with a good evening of tennis and a burger or two!

Club rules and etiquette

New members will have been sent a copy of our club rules for behaviour and etiquette on court. As courts get busy, it is worth reminding everyone of some of the points that are included:

Please do not cross a court where play is in progress.  Wait for the point to finish, and then ask the player if you may cross.  Use the nearest gate to enter or leave the court, closing it after you.

If your ball strays to the back of a nearby court where play is in progress, wait for the point to finish before retrieving it.

Please do not make any undue noise – please no swearing or racquet throwing. Mobile phones should be on silent or switched off during play.

Please note that, with the exception of competition matches, courts must be vacated at the end of each short set (first to six games, tie break at 6 all) if there are other members waiting to play.  If players are practising rather than playing points they must vacate the court after 20 minutes.  This applies to ALL courts (including the Junior Court(s).

Please note, except during tournament play, no singles play is allowed when ALL courts are in use and two or more members are waiting to play.  This also applies to the Junior Court (s) when other Juniors are waiting to play.

Club Safety

You will have been hopefully received the new gate code. This is to help keep our club safe and secure. With this in mind please also ensure that the gate is kept closed at all times.

British Tennis Membership

As a member of our club, you will have received information about a new British Tennis Membership on offer from LTA. As a member of a registered venue, you will automatically be entitled to Lite Membership, which is free of charge. An additional Team Membership has been launched which costs £20 per year. Please click on the link to see if it might be of interest to you.

Barnet LTC – May 2017 Newsletter

 Date Reminders

Please note that this Thursday, 4th May, we are hosting a schools’ tournament between 12pm and 3pm. All courts will be unavailable during this time, and there will be restricted access before and after, as the courts are set up/cleared away. Over 40 teams are taking part, which is a great advert for both the sport and our club.

Pub Night

It’s not too late to book in for our Pub Night this Saturday 6th May. The bar will be open from 7pm for a 7.30pm start. There will be pool, darts and table tennis with lots of good music and also a tasty curry. All of this for just £5.00! Please sign your name on the list in the clubhouse - it’s on the inside of the door as the Club Championships has taken over the main notice-board. Alternatively, you could e-mail our Social Secretary, Linda Searles via

We have a loyal group of regulars who support our social events, but it would be great to see a few new faces…...Everyone welcome!

Open Days

The LTA are once again sponsoring a number of Open Days at clubs across the UK which they are calling Great British Tennis Weekends. We are taking part in both of these, the first of which takes place on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th May. From 2pm to 6pm there will be a timetable of activities for all ages; the idea being that people can come along and try tennis for free, and if they like it, hopefully join our club!

More information can be found on our website, where we have a dedicated page, including a deal for those new members who sign up as a result of attending, and a link to book on to any of the sessions (although people can also just turn up).

There will be light refreshments available on both days. On the Saturday there will be a special exhibition match at 3pm between our current Ladies Single Champion, Nicky Fenn, and former winner, Louise Rice. On Sunday we also have the attraction of one of our men’s teams taking part in a match against another club. Members are welcome to come along to join in the adult free play session that is taking place at 5pm.  We have posters up in schools, local supermarkets and libraries and there will be press coverage too. There is a noticeboard full of information in the clubhouse, plus lots of advertising literature, which you are welcome to take away to give to friends, neighbours and colleagues who you think might be interested.

We would be happy for anyone with Twitter accounts to spread the word too.

Please help us to make this a success!

Gate code

As you may know, we change the gate code every year. This is not to try to confuse members, but to keep our club as secure as possible!

The code will be changing in the next week or so. A text will go out to members informing them of the new number.

May Bank Holiday American Tournament

There is another opportunity to come along to an American Tournament on Monday May 29th. Usual rules apply! 2pm start, £4 fee including teas. These are always well attended and are a great opportunity to play in with other members.

Floodlight tokens

We are aware that there are new pound coins now in circulation.  The token machine does only accept the old coins, so we are looking to change the floodlight boxes to accept coins rather than tokens.  We have however been informed that the new floodlight boxes will only accept the new coins, so we are proposing to delay their installation until after the summer.  In the meantime, please make sure you have the old pound coins if you are using tokens in the next few weeks. The token machine also prefers the older style 5ps and 10ps too!

Non-members and visitors

Our new membership year began a month ago and thankfully many of our members have re-joined. However, there are still quite a large number who have yet to renew. There are always some players who for various reasons no longer wish or are able to be members. However, for those who continue to play, here is a reminder that you do need to re-join, so please do not to be surprised (or offended) if you are challenged.

For those members who wish to bring non-members along for a game, please remember that they should be signed in to the visitor’s book (hanging next to the floodlight token box in the clubhouse) and a £5 fee paid. If the clubhouse is locked then please post this into the postbox on the clubhouse wall. A visitor may not play as such more than 4 times in one year.

Club Nights

All our club nights are up and running. Junior Matchplay takes place on Fridays 4.30pm to 6.30pm, Ladies Night on Tuesdays 6.30pm to 8.30pm and Men’s Night on Wednesdays 6.30pm to 8.30pm. If you haven’t tried them out, please come along and give it a go! Please note that from next week the cost of the adult sessions will be £4 per member.

During these times, and on Friday evenings (6.30pm onwards) when our Club Social Tennis takes place,  priority is given to those attending the sessions. Court 8 can be booked on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for Club Tournament matches, but otherwise please note that you won’t be guaranteed a court.

Club Championships

Our summer tournament is underway. The draw is up in the clubhouse. Please be aware that the deadline for some first round matches is this weekend!

April 2017 Newsletter

Barnet LTC – April 2017 Newsletter

Here is the first newsletter of our membership year. If you are new to the club, then welcome!

Our newsletter goes out monthly to keep you up to date with all that is happening. You can also check out our website, or join us on our Facebook page. In addition, a monthly diary of activities will be posted up in the clubhouse andis attached. This month’s edition is a bit of a marathon one, but please read through to the end so you don’t miss out!

Easter Bank Holiday Tournament

Our year kicks off with an American Tournament on Monday April 17th. It will start at 2pm prompt. Entrance will be £4, which will include afternoon tea. The Wimbledon draw will take place afterwards. Here is a final reminder that to be eligible you will need to be a member and have opted in. If you are quick, you can still pay online and be counted, but payment by cheque/cash can also be brought to the club house up until then. With 23 pairs of tickets up for grabs, you know it makes sense!

The lucky winners will receive an email generated by the LTA on behalf of the club.

This is supervised matchplay, and is appropriate for all ages from mini tennis red up to teenagers, but players must be capable of playing matches. Team Tennis

Our in-house competition has also come to an end. It’s been a close and well fought competition, but with only one point in it, this year the victorious team were The CardioJacks.

Thank you to all who participated, and to the captains for doing such a great job. The winning team will receive their medals on Club Finals day.

Club Championships

If all of this has inspired you, then please note that the closing date for our club Championships is April 20th. You can enter online

or by signing up in the clubhouse. Our Finals Day is on Saturday 8th July, so do not enter if you can’t play on this date or if you are away on holiday for a significant period during the run-up.

This year we are going to try to hold Junior Club Championships finals on the same day as the adults, rather than it being in the school holidays when some are away. Details on how to enter this will go out later as there are not so many rounds of matches to play as in the adult event.

Floodlight Booking

Even though the evenings are getting lighter, it is still possible to book floodlight courts. The booking sheets are in the shed by court 8. This will continue until the last week in April when club sessions begin. After that court 8 will be available to book on Tuesday and Wednesday nights for summer club tournament matches only. Please note that Friday night is club night so those turning up for social tennis take priority.

May Dates

We have a busy time at the beginning of May, so here are some items that just can’t wait until next month’s edition.

Margaret Littleford Cup

Taking place on Monday 1st May from 2pm, this is an annual event held in honour of one of our most popular members. It will be similar to an American Tournament but with a twist to it! Please come along to support it. Entry fee is £5, including teas. There will be a Raffle in aid of Children in Need. Donations of cakes, scones etc would be welcome.

Schools Tournament

On Thursday 4th May we are hosting a tournament for local schools. This is usually a busy event. It will start from 12pm but in order to set up, all courts will be unavailable from 11.30am. If you normally play on a Thursday morning, please try and start earlier, and the event organisers will do their best to let you play as long as possible. The competition will run until approximately 3pm but if you intend to play later, please allow time for the event to finish.

Pub Night -Saturday 6th May

Our next social evening is on Saturday 6th May, 7.30 start. Pub night at the club with a curry .... there will be organised games ; darts, pool , and table tennis  with lots of good music , all for a 'Fiva '.

Come and have some fun !

Keep it clean!

Finally, with the summer season approaching we will have lots of teams visiting from other clubs. Please make sure the courts and clubhouse are kept clean and tidy, so we can look our best for them and all our members.

Date for the Diary:

Great British Tennis Weekend – 13th and 14th May

Wishing all our members a Happy New Tennis Year!
