Barnet LTC – February 2018 Newsletter

Whist Night – 17th February

On Saturday 17th February we will be holding another Whist Drive. Our last two have proved to be really popular evenings. Please arrive at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm prompt start. Cost is £4 per player, including nibbles. For those already familiar with the game, it will be a progressive format with plenty of prizes along the way! All standards, including beginners, welcome. There will be practice sessions after Friday evening social tennis for those who wish to hone their skills. Any questions, please contact Mike or Linda Searles on 07973 834797.

 Ballot for Wimbledon Tickets

A final reminder that you have until February 17th to opt in to the BLTC Wimbledon Ballot. This is important for two reasons. Firstly, the club’s allocation of tickets will be based on the number of its members doing this. Secondly, as a club member you will only be eligible to be entered in to our draw, and therefore win tickets, if you have completed the opt in process. Even if you don’t want Wimbledon tickets yourself, you will be helping your fellow members by opting in.

You will need your BTM username and password to sign in.

Any problems, phone LTA on 020 8487 7000

The draw will be made at our Easter Monday American Tournament on 2nd April.

Singles League

The Men’s Singles League gained some momentum near to the 31st January deadline. John Hall is extending the deadline till Sunday 11th February in order to hopefully get even more matches played. There won’t be any more extensions after that, whatever the weather. After this new divisions will be formed. The ladies and juniors have a bit longer to play their leagues, as there are more in their divisions.

Courts 1-4 - update

The sub-committee, tasked with overseeing the project to resurface courts 1-4, have been busy over the last two months. The Play Test process is largely complete and we are in receipt of consultant Lee West’s Report, following a study and site-survey of the sub-ground. A number of quotations have been received - and on-site meetings at BLTC have subsequently taken place with those sub-contractors leading the Tender process. A meeting of the Committee has confirmed the surface of choice to be artificial grass, as opposed to synthetic clay.  A choice of sub-contractor is soon to be made, so that we may be in a position to reserve a slot to commence works to the project in August. Watch this space for more details!

Court Priority

Our courts can get very busy, particularly on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Here is a reminder of the club’s rules for court play. Please try to avoid these times when arranging singles league matches.

q  Please note that with the exception of competition matches, courts must be vacated at the end of each short set (first to six games, tie break at 6 all) if there are other members waiting to play.  If players are practising rather than playing points they must vacate the court after 20 minutes.  This applies to ALL courts (including the Junior Court(s).

q  Please note, except during tournament play, no singles play is allowed when ALL courts are in use and two or more members are waiting to play.  This also applies to the Junior Court (s) when other Juniors are waiting to play.

It is also worth noting that when court 7 (junior court) is being used for coaching, court 8 becomes the designated junior court, so if juniors are waiting to play, please vacate.

Lights and heaters

Another reminder to make sure that if you are locking up the clubhouse, all heaters and lights are turned off, including the ones behind the bar.

Recycling tennis balls

Our ladies captain Su Pryor is still recycling used tennis balls to raise money for the club. A few members have asked if a bucket could be placed in the shed for times when the clubhouse is not open. There is now one there, as well as just inside the clubhouse door. Thank you for continuing to support this initiative.

 Don’t forget to opt in!

Seasonal Membership Offer

Here is a reminder of the great seasonal deal we are once again offering on membership. From January 1st, pay for the whole of 2018/19 season and you can become a member straight away – that’s up to 3 months extra free!  Please contact our membership secretary Judy Williamson on membership@barnetltc.org for more details.

Don’t forget our referral scheme for membership. Introduce a new full member to the club and you will get a £20 voucher to take off your own renewal fee.

Courts Resurfacing

We have been told recently by Lee West, the LTA's technical consultant, that courts 1 to 4 only have another 12 to 18 months of playability. Over the past year a sub-committee has been working on planning for resurfacing and this has included play testing of various court surfaces. We have narrowed the choice down to between 2 or possibly 3 choices and are receiving quotes from contractors on these surfaces. Fortunately, Lee West has advised us that the general surface is quite flat and the small dips that have appeared in places can be individually repaired rather than needing a new layer of macadam. That will help a great deal with the budget as a new layer of macadam would have added approximately £30,000 to the cost. We have also been advised that the work should take place in the summer rather than spring and the work would take approximately 4 weeks. We are therefore looking at August this year as the most favourable time to go ahead with the resurfacing. We will confirm the court surface and schedule of works as soon as these are known.

Weekly Adult and Junior Coaching Groups

The Spring Term for our junior and adult weekly courses begins from this weekend. If you click the link below you can download a course form from the coaching page of the club website. The courses cater for a range of ages and abilities, and there is a mixture of technical and tactical training.

Bob’s Big Birthday

Bob Price, one of our long-established members, recently celebrated his 80th birthday. Bob not only continues to play regularly but also carries on helping out at the club with a host of duties – many of which go unnoticed – such as emptying and putting out the bins, repairing the scorers and other odd jobs. The club wishes Bob many more years on court and send him their very best wishes.

Ballot for Wimbledon Tickets

Another reminder that you have until February 23rd to opt in to the BLTC Wimbledon Ballot. This is important for two reasons. Firstly, the club’s allocation of tickets will be based on the number of its members doing this. Secondly, as a club member you will only be eligible to be entered into our draw if you have completed the opt in process. You will need your BTM username and password to sign in.

There will be mulled wine and mince pies to help the event go with a swing! Entry fee is £5. No need to sign up, just turn up, for an afternoon of fun; but please be prompt!

There will also be a Christmas Family Tournament over the festive period. The date will be decided nearer the time, depending on weather, so watch out for updates via email, coaching newsletter or Facebook.

New Year’s Eve at BLTC

David Tomlinson Team Tennis Cup

The first team tennis results are in! Mike Searle’s team are having more of a hit than a miss so far, but there is all to play for…

Team                                         Matches played            Points scored

Team C -Hit and Miss                              3                             11

Team B – Loony Legends                       2                              9

Team D – Slam Dunks                             2                              6

Team E – Smith’s Smashers                    1                              2

Team A – Rice’s Rock and Ralliers         2                              2

Singles League

A small but steady trickle of matches have so far been played in the new Singles Leagues. It’s time to make it a flood! So, if you haven’t yet started please don’t wait for others to contact you. The leagues really need everyone to be pro-active in arranging matches, otherwise there are whole divisions where everyone waits for others and nobody ever plays. It would be great if everyone can play at least 1 or 2 matches before Christmas. Remember all results count towards L.T.A. ratings. Please take note of the format and rules.

 Seasonal Membership Offer

If any of you are looking for ideas for a Christmas present for a friend or family member, then once again we are offering a great seasonal deal on membership. Pay for the whole of 2018/19 season from Christmas time onwards, and you can become a member straight away – that’s up to 3 months extra free – and at last year’s prices!!  Please contact our membership secretary Judy Williamson on membership@barnetltc.org for more details.

Don’t forget our referral scheme for membership. Introduce a new full member to the club and you will now get a £20 voucher to take off your own renewal fee.

Bar Manager

Unfortunately, we are still looking to fill the position of bar manager.  This is a key role and we are very keen to maintain the social side of our club, which is enjoyed by many members. Without help in this vital role there is a concern that the "fun stuff" will suffer. The various functions also help considerably towards club funds.

Until the position is filled permanently, we are looking to get a rota of volunteers who may be willing to help out on an ad hoc basis, but who are unable to commit permanently.  If you think you would be able to help either keep the bar stocked, or be prepared to serve behind the bar at the various functions, then please get in touch with our Chairman, John Kamenou via john@executivedevelopments.co.uk.

Any support you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Trade in

Calling all plumbers, electricians and carpenters lurking amongst our membership. If you have any of these skills and would be willing and able to help out every now and then with maintenance jobs, then please get in touch via

Court Safety

At this time of year, the pathways and courts can be slippery. Players are reminded of their own responsibility with respect to playing in poor weather conditions. We want our members to enjoy their tennis, but to stay safe.

Wishing  everyone at Barnet LTC a Happy Christmas time and a fit and healthy 2018!

Please note, that position of Bar Manager is still vacant. This is an important role in order for the club to be able to hold social events and raise money for the club. If you think you can help, please contact one of the members of the committee. This is a role that could be shared.

Sunday 5th November

This Sunday is a busy one on court with two home matches taking place; a Middlesex cup starting at 12pm (3 courts) and Over 45's men's at 1pm (2 courts). There will be spare courts but not many!

Casino Night – Saturday 11th November

After last year’s success, our next event is another “red carpet” Casino Night. Doors open at 8pm. Tickets cost £10 with a free cocktail for early sign ups/advance bookings. Canapes will be served from 9pm with the bar open until late. There will be a prize for the person who can make the most with their gambling chips (included in entry fee).

Friends and family (non-members) welcome, as long as you all dress to impress!

Please sign up in the clubhouse if you wish to attend.

If anyone has experience running a Black Jack table and could help out, please let Linda Searles know on 07973 834797

Tennis Fit

There are 2 final sessions of Stephen’s Thursday Tennis Fit taking place on Thursday 2nd November and Thursday 9th November 7pm to 8pm. Those who have attended have given great feedback but we need more people, so please come and try it out while you still can!

Singles League

Don’t forget that you only have until November 5th to enter the Autumn/Winter Singles League. Players may enter either on-line using the link below or via the entry list on the clubhouse notice-board. Juniors are welcome to enter, as long as they are playing full court (green or yellow ball). Juniors who are capable of competing with adults may be merged into adult groups, but there will also be junior groups if there are enough entries. All results will be sent in to count towards LTA ratings. To find out more and send in your entry please click the link…

Team Tennis- David Tomlinson Cup

Entry for team tennis has now closed and, if they haven’t already, your captain will soon be in touch! This year the winning team will not only receive their individual medals but also be recipients of The David Tomlinson Cup, in memory of our former Chairman who was a great advocate of the event.

 Recycling tennis balls

Our Ladies captain Su Pryor has started recycling used tennis balls for the club. For every 200 balls the club will receive £40, which is a great way to utilise all the balls we get through in matches, tournaments etc. If you have any unwanted balls to add, please place in to the black bucket in the clubhouse (under the table by the old token machine). Please note, they shouldn’t be wet, dirty or fluffy! Su has already sent off the first 200, so providing they meet the criteria for wear and tear our first £40 should be on its way….

Wimbledon Opt-in

Don’t forget to opt in to be eligible for next year’s Wimbledon ticket draw. If you are a BTM once you have logged in, just follow the instructions.

For those members without a BTM, you are entitled to free membership as a member of our club. Just follow the link to complete.

Don’t forget to put Barnet LTC as your venue.

Quiz Night

Martin Dawson hosted another challenging (and fun!) quiz night. Many thanks to all those who donated raffle prizes which meant that over £120 was donated to Stand Up To Cancer.

Another reminder about treating our scoring posts with care. Unfortunately, the yellow and red plastic game and set markers get broken, particularly when players use their rackets, rather than their hands, to clear the score. Bob Price and Martin Dawson will tell you how fiddly they are to replace! Please help to keep them happy by treating them gently….

Date for the diary

The ever popular Mistletoe and Wine event takes place on Sunday 10th December. More details in our next issue.

October 2017 Newsletter

Autumn Finals Day – Saturday 14th October

The finals of our Autumn Championships are fast approaching. They will take place on Saturday 14th October. Please note this will include our Junior Finals too, so there promises to be some exciting matches. First rounds will take place from approximately 11.30am.

Barnet LTC Annual General Meeting – Sunday 15th October

Our AGM is due to take place on Sunday 15th October at 2pm. As many members as possible are asked to attend. The Chairman John Kamenou and his committee present the annual reports, and election of the new committee takes place. Minutes of the previous meeting, which was held last October, are available in the clubhouse and on the club website. A nominations list is also posted in the clubhouse. Anyone interested in standing for a post will need to be nominated and seconded by another adult member. In particular, the club will be looking to appoint a new Bar Manager.

A huge thank you to Sheila Rice, our out-going bar Manager, for all her hard work in this position.

If you think you might be interested, please speak to one of the current committee. Please note any items from members to be raised under AOB need to be notified in advance. This can be done by leaving in a sealed envelope in the ‘Suggestions Box’ in the clubhouse or emailing to bltcadmin@barnetltc.org  by Friday 6th October at the latest.

It would be great if there was a good turnout for this event, so please come along and show your support for the club and find out what the committee has in store for the year ahead.

Quiz Night -Saturday 21st October

Another of Martin Dawson’s popular “Half ‘n’ Half” Quiz takes place on Saturday 21st October from 7.30pm. A mixture of music and trivia, entry is £4 per player (nibbles included). Sign up in the clubhouse. You can enter with your own table of 8 or just add your name and we will find you some fellow quizzers!

Casino Night -Saturday 11th November

By popular request the Casino night returns to BLTC Saturday 11th November – definitely a night to book in the diary! Tickets will be sold in advance so watch the notice boards for more details.

Singles League and Team Tennis

As Autumn gets underway, out internal winter competitions are due to start soon.

Team Tennis (doubles) matches take place on Saturday and Sunday afternoons (from 1pm). Players of all standards are welcome to enter but you must be adult, or a junior with adult status. You play as part of a team, so this is an excellent way of getting to know other members.

Details for both events will be published shortly.

 Event round-ups

Thanks to Linda and Mike Searles for a successful Pub Night. There were a great selection of beers which seemed to go down very well!  Tina Bloch beat every woman and man in the club to become the Table Tennis champ. Lizzie and Ben Coles were the Darts Champions. Linda and Mike managed to win the pool, when their opponents knocked the black ball down prematurely, which may have been due to the alcohol consumption and lateness of the hour. Great plan!!

There was a good turnout for our One Day Mixed Tournament, with 14 pairs taking part. A-Group winners were Bolaji and Sarah Kuti, runners Up Albert Durbal and Jane Milton. B-Group winners were Steve and Caroline Lawson, runners Up Mark and Dawn Hanson.

Junior Night

Please note Friday night match play night has now finished until next summer term.

Floodlight Booking On-Line

An email was sent out announcing the launch of our on-line booking system for the floodlights – no more rummaging in the shed required!

For more information, please check our website for details.

You can also see dates for our upcoming winter fixtures in the club tennis diary.

Wimbledon Opt-in

If you have a British Tennis Membership you should have received an e-mail from LTA confirming that you can now opt in to be eligible for next year’s Wimbledon ticket draw. Once you have logged in, just follow the instructions.

For those members without a BTM, you are entitled to free membership as a member of our club. Just follow the link to complete.

Don’t forget to put Barnet LTC as your venue.

Match Balls

If anyone wants to buy a souvenir of their game or just wishes for some relatively good balls at a bargain price, match balls are available to purchase at £1 per can from behind the bar.
