Barnet LTC – April 2016 Newsletter

Here is the first newsletter of our membership year. If you are new to the club, then welcome! Our newsletter goes out monthly to keep you up to date with all that is happening. You can also check out our website, or join us on our Facebook page. This month’s edition is a bit of a marathon one, but please read through to the end so you don’t miss out!

Barnet marches on

As our winter season comes to a close, we thought you would like to know how our many teams have fared.

Men - It has been a fantastic winter for the Barnet Men’s teams. Across two leagues our top two teams have won 21 out of 23 matches; a quite remarkable record against strong competition, congratulations to those involved:

Herts 1 (singles) - 1st in top division
Herts 2 (singles) - 1st in the second division
Middlesex 1 (doubles) - 2nd in top division
Middlesex 2 (doubles) - 1st in the second division

Furthermore, Danny Williamson's 4th team are flying high too in Division 6, but are truly in a dogfight for those top two places. Bryan Lawrie's Middlesex 3rd team are also battling valiantly as they face a battle to remain in the same division as our second team.

The Men’s Vets have had mixed results. Our Men’s 45 & Over first team have finished towards the top of their division whilst the Men’s 45 & Over second team and 55s and Over have found it a bit more of a challenge.

Ladies - The winter season has been a bit of a bumpy ride for the Ladies' teams, but standing proud are the Ladies Senior's team, led by Sheila Rice. For the first time in many years they have bucked a losing trend and have finished second in Division 4A. It looks like promotion beckons - well done team!

In the Middlesex floodlight leagues, Suzanne Petrou's first team did well to stay in Division 3. Following a poor start to the season they finished strongly, with a 16-0 over their relegation rivals to ensure they stayed up. For the second team, it was not to be such a happy ending. Following promotion last season, Su Pryor's team is sadly going back to life in Division 5, but hopefully they'll bounce back up again soon.

Mixed – Our mixed floodlight teams have had great results. Captained by Aran Mustafa and Jackie Czuprynski, both have secured promotion, finishing 2nd and 1st  in their respective divisions. The Mixed Vets first team, ably led by Geoff Arnett, are currently sitting top of Division 6B. Unfortunately, there are still lots of un-played matches in this division so we're not sure what the final standings will be. Let's hope they continue their march up the league, with a third successive promotion.

In their first season in the league, the newly created Mixed Vets second team finished a creditable 3rd in Division 8B, so congratulations go to Lesley Seaborne and all her players. It's good to see more members gracing the courts for a spot of mixed doubles.

Well done to all those who have captained teams. A lot of hard work goes into running them, overseen by our Men’s captain Aran Mustafa and our Ladies’ captain Jane Crowley. Let’s hope our summer season is just as successful!

 Team Tennis

Our in-house competition has also come to a close. This year there was a clear winner with Alex Lake’s Scary Beetroots winning 7 out of their 8 matches. Well done to Alex, Robin Goldman, Catherine Kenny-Tempest, Sarah Kiernan, Christiane Kuti, Ergian Musto, Julie Power, Isabelle Ridgewell and Linda Searles. The final table of results will be displayed in the clubhouse soon.

May Dates

We have a busy time at the beginning of May, so here are some items that just can’t wait until next month’s edition.

Margaret Littleford Cup

Taking place on Monday 2nd May from 2pm, this is an annual event held in honour of one of our most popular members. It will be similar to an American Tournament but with a twist to it! Please come along to support it. Entry fee is £5, including teas. There will be a Raffle in aid of Children in Need. Donations of cakes, scones etc would be welcome.

Schools Tournament

On Wednesday 4th May we are hosting a tournament for local schools. 40 have signed up for this event. It will start from 12pm but in order to set up, all courts will be unavailable from 11.30am. If you normally play on a Wednesday morning, please try and start earlier, and the event organisers will do their best to let you play as long as possible. The competition will run until approximately 3pm but if you intend to play later, please allow time for the event to finish.

Election Day

Our clubhouse will be in use as a polling station on Thursday May 5th. As always, although members may play tennis, access to the clubhouse will be restricted to using the toilets only.

 Floodlight Booking

Even though the evenings are getting lighter, it is still possible to book floodlight courts. The booking sheets are in the shed by court 8. This will continue until the last week in April when club sessions begin. After that court 8 will be available to book on Tuesday and Wednesday nights for summer club tournament matches only. Please note that Friday night is club night so those turning up for social tennis take priority.

Active Kids Vouchers

Please keep collecting your Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers for the club. There is a collecting box in the clubhouse.

Tennis Nuts

Here is a reminder that as members of BLTC you can benefit from a 5% discount on any purchases you make from Simply enter username barnet and password discount if you shop on-line, or mention you are a member if you visit their Northwood store.

Washed up

This a reminder to all members that if you help yourselves to a drink in the clubhouse kitchen, please make sure that you wash up afterwards. With the summer season approaching we will have lots of teams visiting from other clubs…a bowlful of mouldy mugs is not how we wish to greet them!

Nearly there…

As you may have noticed, the much needed refurbishment of our toilets and changing rooms is underway. Please bear with us whilst it takes place. It will be worth it!

Dates for the Diary:

Family Bingo Night – Saturday May 7th from 5pm
